Overview
The University of Waterloo is a publicly funded research university located in Waterloo, Ontario, Canada. It was established in 1957, initially hosting just 74 engineering students with a pioneering vision: to create an environment of co-operative education — a model that would transform university education across North America. The University of Waterloo operates the largest post-secondary co-operative education program in the world, with over 20,000 undergraduate students enrolled in the university's co-op program. Waterloo is a member of the U15 — Canada's group of research-intensive universities.
Now Waterloo hosts more than 42,000 students each year, with students from 120 countries worldwide. There are six faculties at the university including Arts, Engineering, Environment, Health, Mathematics, and Science. Students can choose to study any of the 100+ programs available including biotechnology, data science, digital arts, health, robotics, and sustainability.
Waterloo is widely regarded as Canada's most innovative university — ranked #1 in Canada for innovation for 30 consecutive years (Maclean's) — a distinction that no other Canadian university comes close to matching. In 2014, a study found that the University of Waterloo had the third-most hired undergraduate candidates in Silicon Valley. Google's engineering director stated that "the University of Waterloo is one of Google's largest three or four recruiting universities year-over-year worldwide, along with MIT and Carnegie Mellon." In 2016, Startup Compass found that Waterloo alumni were the second-most frequently hired in small and medium-sized companies in Silicon Valley.
Students can earn up to CAD $135,000 through Co-op programs over the course of their degree and access scholarships worth up to CAD $80,000. Waterloo is ranked #18 in the world for startup founders (PitchBook 2025) and #27 globally for driving innovation (Fast Company's Ignition Schools 2025) — making it one of the world's top universities for producing entrepreneurs and innovators.
The University of Waterloo's alumni include Mike Lazaridis (co-founder of BlackBerry), Tobias Lütke (CEO and co-founder of Shopify — one of Canada's most valuable companies), and Kevin O'Leary (investor and TV personality). Nobel Prize winner, five Killam Prize winners, and two Canada 150 Research Chairs are among the university's academic achievements.
