University of Canterbury | Te Whare Wānanga o Waitaha

Overview

Originally founded as Canterbury College in 1873, the University of Canterbury (UC) is the second-oldest university in New Zealand. With historic ties to the Universities of Oxford and Cambridge, UC was set up by scholars who based it on the Oxbridge model. Unlike Oxford, however, women students were permitted from the outset. One of the university's earliest graduates, Helen Connon, was the first woman in the British Empire to be granted a degree with Honours.

Located in the Christchurch suburb of Ilam, the University is a ten-minute drive from the city centre and close to both mountains and the sea. Its campus houses a variety of facilities including libraries, laboratories and research centres to accommodate its students. UC offers 70 degree programmes across five colleges, including Arts, Business and Economics, Education, Engineering and Science, and a School of Law.

Since its establishment, UC has produced a number of well-known graduates who have impacted the world, including physicist Ernest Rutherford, author Margaret Mahy, and astrophysicist Roy Kerr.  Ernest Rutherford was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1908 for his investigations into the disintegration of the elements and the chemistry of radioactive substances. He has been described as "the father of nuclear physics." He was the first Oceanian Nobel laureate. Other distinguished alumni include four New Zealand Prime Ministers — Christopher Luxon, John Key, Bill Rowling, and Jenny Shipley — Booker Prize-winning novelist Eleanor Catton (the youngest ever Booker Prize winner), astrophysicist Roy Kerr who solved Einstein's field equations, and New Zealand Finance Minister Nicola Willis.

With more than 26,000 students from over 100 countries, UC is home to a vibrant and diverse community and ranks as one of the world's top 100 student cities (QS Rankings 2026).  UC is proud to have been serving communities for over 150 years, with 60 international partner universities, over 3,000 employer connections, and up to 75 senior international academics visiting each year.

The university's 76-hectare Ilam campus is widely considered one of the most beautiful in the Southern Hemisphere — surrounded by botanical gardens, the tranquil Avon River, and green open spaces — all just minutes from Christchurch's thriving rebuilt city centre, snow-capped Southern Alps, world-class ski resorts, and pristine Pacific Ocean beaches.
