Overview
Western University, located in London, Ontario, Canada, was established in the late 1870s with the aim of giving each of its students "The Western Experience." It was previously known as the University of Western Ontario, but went through a rebranding process in 2012, becoming commonly known as Western University. Its 12 faculties and three affiliated university colleges offer students a choice of over 400 study programmes. Western is ranked as one of Canada's leading research-intensive universities, with annual research funding in excess of $283 million, and has a history of excellence in fundamental and applied discovery.
Founded in 1878, Western University has a total revenue of $1.67 billion, an endowment of $1.3 billion, and library holdings of 6.11 million volumes across a land area of 495.7 hectares. Western is a founding member of the U15 — Canada's group of the most distinguished research universities — placing it in the same category as UBC, McGill, and the University of Toronto.
Western's 42,978 students include 5,445 international students from 134 countries. Western is one of Canada's top universities for entrance averages for first-year students at 90.9% — confirming it attracts Canada's very brightest high school graduates. It also has one of Canada's highest first-to-second-year retention rates at 92.6%. More than $100 million is provided annually in scholarships, awards, fellowships, teaching assistantships, and financial aid. Western has had 24 Rhodes Scholars, 85 Fellows of the Royal Society of Canada, and has 70 active Canada Research Chairs.
Western's main campus is one of Canada's most beautiful — stretching across the Thames River on 455 hectares of Gothic-style buildings mixed with modern facilities, in the vibrant city of London, Ontario. The campus includes its own UniverCity arts district, one of North America's best health sciences faculties, and one of Canada's most innovative business schools — the Ivey Business School — consistently ranked one of the best MBA programs in Canada and globally.
Notable alumni include Justin Trudeau (attended briefly), Dr. Amit Chakma (former UWO president, one of Canada's most prominent academic leaders), and many of Canada's leading doctors, lawyers, engineers, and business leaders.
