Overview
Tohoku University is a research-oriented institution located in Sendai, in the northeast region of Japan. Established in 1907 as Japan's third National University, it was the first Japanese university to accept female students. TU has become one of Japan's leading universities, with 10 faculties, 15 graduate schools, 3 professional graduate schools, 6 research institutes, and a university hospital. The number of students is approximately 18,000, including 2,200 international students as of May 1, 2025.
TU was approved as the first of Japan's "Universities for International Research Excellence" (UIRE) in December 2024 — a new scheme where the Japanese Government certifies and provides huge financial support to institutions that excel in international research. As the first recipient, TU aims to pioneer the future through excellence in research, talent development, and social co-creation. This historic designation — making Tohoku Japan's first UIRE — comes with significant additional government funding and a mandate to dramatically accelerate international research collaboration, making it an extraordinarily exciting moment to join this institution.
On 22 June 1907, Tohoku Imperial University was established by the Meiji government as the third Imperial University of Japan, after Tokyo Imperial University (1877) and Kyoto Imperial University (1897). From its inception, it advocated "open-door" policies, becoming the first university in Japan to accept both female students in 1913 and foreign students. It was not until 1911 that teaching and research activities started in Sendai.
Notable alumni include Sumio Iijima (physicist, inventor of carbon nanotubes), Fujio Masuoka (engineer, developer of flash memory — the technology behind USB drives and SSDs), Shun-ichi Iwasaki (pioneer of perpendicular recording and modern hard disk drives), Jun-ichi Nishizawa (inventor of optical fiber, laser diode, and PIN diode), and Masato Sagawa (inventor of sintered NdFeB magnets — winner of 2022 Queen Elizabeth Prize for Engineering). Nobel laureate Koichi Tanaka (Chemistry, 2002 — mass spectrometry of biological macromolecules) is also affiliated with Tohoku University.
Tohoku is one of the top research colleges in Japan. According to Thomson Reuters, Tohoku is among the top research institutes in Japan. Its research excellence is especially distinctive in the areas of Materials Science, Physics, Pharmacology and Toxicology, and Chemistry. The university's main campus in Sendai — set on the ancient site of Aoba Castle with stunning hillside views — is one of Japan's most beautiful and historically resonant academic settings.
