Pohang University of Science And Technology (POSTECH)

Overview

Pohang University of Science and Technology (POSTECH) is a private research university in Pohang, South Korea, established on December 3, 1986, by POSCO — a South Korean steel company — with Founding Chairman Tae-joon Park and the university's first president, Hogil Kim. The university was founded as a research-focused institution and also hosted POSCO's Research Institute of Science and Technology (RIST) on campus. The founding chairman used the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) as the explicit model for POSTECH — creating Korea's answer to Caltech: small, intensely research-focused, and among Asia's most elite science and technology institutions.

There are 11 undergraduate departments at the university, four specialising in science and seven specialising in engineering. The university also has a graduate program consisting of the same 11 departments, five divisions, two interdisciplinary programs, two professional graduate schools, and one special graduate school. The student-to-faculty ratio is 5:1, enabling faculty to focus on individual students and provide high-quality teaching and mentorship. With a 400-acre campus, POSTECH is fully equipped with the latest facilities.

In 1994, POSTECH established the Pohang Accelerator Laboratory (PAL) — a third-generation synchrotron light source that became a national research facility. In 2016, the university completed construction of the PAL-XFEL (X-ray Free Electron Laser) — a fourth-generation light source costing approximately USD 390 million — the third facility of its kind in the world. These world-class research tools attract scientists from across Korea and internationally, giving POSTECH students unparalleled access to cutting-edge experimental infrastructure.

POSTECH was ranked 1st among the top 100 universities under 50 years old by Times Higher Education in 2012, 2013, and 2014 consecutively — an extraordinary achievement. In 1998, Asiaweek Magazine ranked POSTECH 1st among science and technology universities in Asia. POSTECH provides the highest educational investment and the most per-student scholarship support in Korea, allowing students from all economic backgrounds to obtain a POSTECH education.

POSTECH has a total enrolment of approximately 3,600 students — making it one of the smallest elite research universities in Asia by headcount, with a deep commitment to quality over scale. Approximately 9% of students are international. Around 85% of courses that count toward undergraduate and graduate majors are offered in English — far above the Korean university average — making POSTECH uniquely accessible to international students.

Notable alumni include Hong Byung-hee (Professor, Seoul National University) and distinguished scientists, engineers, and researchers who have gone on to lead research divisions at Samsung, SK Hynix, and Korea's national science institutes.

Ranking

In the QS World University Rankings 2026, POSTECH ranks #83 globally — reflecting its strong academic performance and research impact. The QS methodology evaluates Academic Reputation, Employer Reputation, Faculty-Student Ratio, Citations per Faculty, International Faculty Ratio, and International Student Ratio. Despite being only 39 years old, POSTECH has achieved a global ranking that most universities take over a century to reach.

In the Times Higher Education rankings, POSTECH scored highly because compilers place less emphasis on "reputation and heritage" and give more weight to objective measures including the influence of universities' research, placing POSTECH 53rd in THE. POSTECH remains third-best ranked in Korea, after Seoul National University and KAIST, in the QS Asian University Rankings. In 2012 and 2013, THE ranked POSTECH 1st in its "100 Under 50 Young Universities" rankings — among the most significant accolades for any young university globally.

POSTECH is ranked 32nd in the world for Materials Science in QS Subject Rankings — a field where POSTECH is a global research leader.
