Overview
Kyoto University is one of Asia's leading research-oriented institutions and is famed for producing world-beating researchers, including Nobel Prize laureates. The motto of the school, which was founded in 1897, is "freedom of academic spirit," a value it aims to instill in the 22,000 students enrolled in its undergraduate and graduate programs. Popularly known as Kyodai (京大) in Japan, Kyoto University is Japan's second most prestigious national university — a fiercely independent intellectual powerhouse renowned for its culture of creative dissent, individual scholarship, and revolutionary scientific discovery.
Kyoto University can trace its roots back to the Chemistry School (Seimi-kyoku), an institution for Chemistry and Physics founded in Osaka in 1869. In 1894, this institution was replaced by the Third Higher School. Back then, Japan had only one university — the Imperial University (today's University of Tokyo) — and the call for the nation's second university in the Kansai region was gaining momentum.
There have been 21 Nobel Prize laureates, 2 Fields Medalists, 1 Abel Prize winner, 1 Gauss Prize winner, and 5 Lasker Award recipients affiliated with KyotoU either as alumni or faculty members. Nobel laureates include Hideki Yukawa (Physics, 1949), Shinichiro Tomonaga (Physics, 1965), Kenichi Fukui (Chemistry, 1981), Susumu Tonegawa (Physiology or Medicine, 1987), Ryoji Noyori (Chemistry, 2001), Makoto Kobayashi and Toshihide Maskawa (Physics, 2008), Shinya Yamanaka (Physiology or Medicine, 2012 — iPS cells), Isamu Akasaki (Physics, 2014 — blue LED), Tasuku Honjo (Physiology or Medicine, 2018 — cancer immunotherapy), and Akira Yoshino (Chemistry, 2019 — lithium-ion batteries).
KyotoU continues to enhance its diversity through exchange and interactions among nearly 3,000 researchers from around the world working in its labs, and more than 8,000 researchers dispatched to all corners of the world. International education is a key priority with over 2,600 inbound students from more than 110 countries. The university's three campuses — Yoshida (main, with the iconic Clock Tower Centennial Hall), Uji (engineering and science research), and Katsura (advanced engineering) — are set in Kyoto, Japan's ancient imperial capital, a city of unparalleled cultural beauty with over 1,600 Buddhist temples and Shinto shrines.
Nintendo's global headquarters is in Kyoto, just 15 minutes from campus. The company collaborates with Kyoto University on game AI, human-computer interaction, and hardware engineering research. The ceramics and electronics giant Kyocera was founded by a Kyoto-area entrepreneur and maintains deep ties with the university, funding materials science research and recruiting heavily from Kyoto's engineering programs.
