Overview
The École Normale Supérieure de Lyon (ENS de Lyon, also known as ENSL or Normale Sup' Lyon) is a French grande école located in the city of Lyon. It is one of the four prestigious Écoles Normales Supérieures in France. The school is composed of two academic units — Arts and Sciences — with campuses in Lyon, near the confluence of the Rhône and Saône rivers.
The tradition of Écoles Normales Supérieures dates back to the Decree of 9 Brumaire AN III (1794), which led to the creation of the first ENS dedicated to training educators who would train future teachers. In 1880, Jules Ferry founded the two schools that would eventually become ENS de Lyon: l'École de Fontenay for women (1880) and l'École de Saint-Cloud for men (1882). In September 1987, for the first time, an ENS was established outside the French capital when scientists moved to the brand-new Monod campus in the Gerland district of Lyon. In 2010, the two branches — Sciences (Monod campus) and Humanities (Descartes campus) — merged into one single institution: the École Normale Supérieure de Lyon.
ENS de Lyon is a highly selective school for multidisciplinary studies. It has 2,400 students, 500 doctoral students, 700 faculty and scholars, 600 administrative staff, 70 nationalities on campus, 12 teaching departments, and 30 research units.
ENS de Lyon is a Grande École — a French institution of higher education that is separate from, but parallel to, the main French public university system. Similar to the Ivy League in the United States, Oxbridge in the UK, and the C9 League in China, Grandes Écoles are elite academic institutions that admit students through an extremely competitive process. They typically have much smaller class sizes and student bodies than public universities, and many programs are taught in English.
Students who succeed in the entrance examinations — which attract some 6,000 candidates for just 228 positions — are known as normaliens-élèves. EU/EEA students who pass the entrance exam are considered trainee public servants and receive a salary for their studies over 4 years. In return, they commit to serving in public service for 10 years.
The ENS de Lyon is a symbol of French Republican meritocracy. It remains committed to disseminating knowledge to the widest audience and promoting equal opportunity. The school has earned a Fields Medal (Cédric Villani, 2010) and many CNRS medals. It encourages interdisciplinary studies to foster a better understanding of complex contemporary issues.
Notable alumni include Fields Medal winner Cédric Villani (2010), mathematician Alessio Figalli (Fields Medal 2018), and many of France's leading academics, civil servants, scientists, and intellectuals.

Ranking
The 2026 QS World University Rankings ranked ENS de Lyon 205th in the world. However, international rankings do not suit well the French academic system, where research organisations are often independent from universities. Moreover, ENS institutions are small, favouring education quality rather than research productivity. The different Écoles Normales Supérieures are considered among the highest French academic institutions due to their endowment, prestige, and extraordinary selectivity.
ENS de Lyon is ranked 205th globally in QS 2026 — and 5th in France — recognised for its strong research performance and faculty-to-student ratio.
Within France's national ranking systems and among academic peers, ENS de Lyon is considered one of the four most elite institutions in the country — alongside ENS Ulm (Paris), ENS Paris-Saclay, and ENS Rennes — producing a disproportionate share of France's leading academics, scientists, and civil servants.
A key indicator of ENS de Lyon's true standing is the alumni achievement record, not raw size-based metrics:
- Fields Medal winners affiliated: Cédric Villani (2010), Alessio Figalli (2018) among ENS system alumni
- CNRS Gold Medal winners — numerous alumni and faculty
- European Mathematical Society Prize winners — Sophie Morel, Emmanuel Grenier
- Students/alumni include leading figures in mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology, computer science, humanities, and public service
| Ranking Body | Rank |
|---|---|
| QS World University Rankings 2026 | #205 Globally / #5 in France |
| THE Young University Rankings | Top 100 |
| National Academic Prestige (France) | Top 4 Grandes Écoles — ENS |
| Alumni per capita distinction | Among highest in France — Fields Medal, CNRS Gold Medal |

Cost of Studying at École Normale Supérieure de Lyon
While most Grandes Écoles are much more expensive than French universities, ENS de Lyon only charges a relatively small fee — dependent on the student's income — in addition to the standard university tuition fee, even though it increased a little in 2025.
On 16 June 2025, the Board of Directors voted on a new tuition fee grid for the ENS de Lyon degree — based on the principle of a contribution indexed to income, guaranteeing continuous progressivity with no threshold effect. A significant proportion of students will be exempt, including those who do not receive scholarships. This measure finances actions including real estate projects for student life and outgoing mobility.
Lyon is France's second biggest city in terms of student population, with 130,000 students including 15,000 international students — and is significantly more affordable than Paris.
