Waseda University

Overview

Waseda University was founded as Tōkyō Professional School (東京專門學校) on 21 October 1882 by samurai scholar, Meiji-era politician, and former Prime Minister Ōkuma Shigenobu. Although Waseda formally adopted the term university in its title in 1902, it was not until 1920 that it received formal government recognition as a university — becoming, with Keio University, the first private university in Japan. The university is organised into 36 departments: 13 undergraduate schools and 23 graduate schools. As of 2023, there are 38,776 undergraduate students and 8,490 graduate students.

Waseda University, a top institution of higher education based in central Tokyo, has 47,000+ students in 13 undergraduate and 20 postgraduate schools. Waseda University was founded by Shigenobu Okuma under three principles: academic independence, practical innovation, and enlightened citizenship. It boasts a strong alumni network of over 660,000 members from all over the world and lists among its alumni 8 Japanese prime ministers, 100+ executives of global corporations such as Fast Retailing (UNIQLO) and Nintendo, as well as novelist Haruki Murakami and figure skater Yuzuru Hanyu.

Waseda University Japan has produced 8 Japanese Prime Ministers and 48 CEOs of Fortune 500 companies. This includes CEOs and co-founders of brands like Sony, Toshiba, and Nintendo. It is also considered the #1 university in Japan for study abroad programs. Waseda Japan is in active partnerships with 574 universities and organisations. The Graduate School of Business and Finance is one of only 2 business schools in Japan to be accredited by both AACSB and EQUIS.

The university's faculty and alumni include eight prime ministers of Japan, three prime ministers of Korea, and founders of leading Japanese and Korean companies such as Sony, Uniqlo, Samsung, CJ, Lotte, and POSCO. Waseda's main campus is located in the Nishi-Waseda district of Shinjuku, Tokyo — one of the world's greatest global cities. Apart from the main campus in Shinjuku, there are other campuses in Chūō, Nishitōkyō, Tokorozawa, Honjō, and Kitakyūshū. The iconic Ōkuma Auditorium, a three-storey main auditorium seating 1,435, is the symbol of the university. Waseda also operates 21 research institutes at its main Shinjuku campus.

Waseda University is #2 in Japan for the most number of international students (over 8,000 students from 100+ countries) and has 800+ partnerships and exchange programs with universities worldwide. With all-English degree programs in 19 schools, students can learn Japanese in parallel to their major studies, while enjoying the many benefits of living in Tokyo.

Notable alumni include Haruki Murakami (globally celebrated novelist), Yuzuru Hanyu (two-time Olympic figure skating champion), Ichiro Matsui (mayor of Osaka), Toshifumi Suzuki (founder of 7-Eleven Japan), and the founders of Sony, Samsung, and POSCO.
