University of Waikato

Overview

The University of Waikato (Māori: Te Whare Wānanga o Waikato), established in 1964, is a public research university located in Hamilton, New Zealand, with an additional campus in Tauranga. The university performs research in numerous disciplines such as education, social sciences, and management, and is an innovator in environmental science, marine and freshwater ecology, engineering, computer science and artificial intelligence. It offers degrees in health, engineering, computer science, management, Māori and Indigenous Studies, the arts, psychology, social sciences and education.

The University of Waikato was founded after years of energetic lobbying by regional and national leaders who recognised the need for a university in Hamilton. In 1960, the newly established Hamilton Teachers' College, joined by a fledgling branch of the University of Auckland, opened a joint campus at Ruakura. In 1964, the two institutions moved to their new home, and the following year the University was officially opened by then Governor-General Sir Bernard Fergusson. Sir Don Llewellyn was the founding Vice-Chancellor. By the 1980s, Waikato was the fastest-growing university in New Zealand.

The Waikato Management School is Triple Crown accredited — by AACSB, AMBA, and EQUIS — and is in the top 1% of business schools globally. The School of Computing and Mathematical Sciences became the first New Zealand member of the international group of iSchools in 2016. In 2021, the university launched The Artificial Intelligence Institute to leverage AI for the benefit of its communities. The university is focused on real-time analytics for big data and created WEKA (Waikato Environment for Knowledge Analysis), one of the world's most popular open-source tools for machine learning, downloaded more than 10 million times and cited in more than 18,000 research and applied data science publications.

The University of Waikato has a longstanding relationship with the Kīngitanga and Waikato-Tainui, the traditional owners and custodians of the Waikato region. The University was the first in New Zealand to receive Chinese Ministry of Education approval to fully deliver degrees in China through its Joint Institute with Hangzhou City University (HZCU).

The Hamilton campus covers 65 hectares of park-like grounds with modern facilities including the Gallagher Academy of Performing Arts, the Student Centre Te Manawa (with library and central study space), a gym, swimming pool, cafes, and health services. The Tauranga campus opened in 2019 in the city's CBD, adding to the university's Bay of Plenty presence.

Notable achievements include being the first New Zealand university to combine with its regional teachers' college, and pioneering Māori and Indigenous Studies as a global academic discipline.
