Overview
University College Dublin originates in a body founded in 1854, which opened as the Catholic University of Ireland with John Henry Newman as its first rector. It re-formed in 1880 and was chartered in its own right in 1908. With more than 38,000 students, it is Ireland's largest university.
Originally known as the Catholic University of Ireland and subsequently as the Royal University, the university became UCD in 1908 and a constituent college of the National University of Ireland (NUI). In 1997, UCD became an autonomous university within the loose federal structure of the NUI. UCD has been a major contributor to the making of modern Ireland. Many UCD students and staff participated in the struggle for Irish independence, and the university has produced numerous Irish Presidents and Taoisigh (Prime Ministers) in addition to generations of Irish business, professional, cultural and sporting leaders. Among UCD's well-known graduates are authors Maeve Binchy, Emma Donoghue, Roddy Doyle, Flann O'Brien, Marina Carr, and Colm Tóibín, and actors Gabriel Byrne and Brendan Gleeson. Perhaps the best known of all UCD's graduates is the writer James Joyce, who completed his Bachelor of Arts at the university in 1902.
Originally located at St Stephen's Green and Earlsfort Terrace in Dublin's city centre, all faculties later relocated to a 133-hectare (330-acre) campus at Belfield, six kilometres south of the city centre. In 1991, UCD purchased a second site in Blackrock, which currently houses the Michael Smurfit Graduate Business School.
University College Dublin is one of Europe's leading research-intensive universities and Ireland's largest university, with a vibrant community of over 39,000 students and 4,000 staff from more than 152 countries. UCD combines a rich academic heritage with a global outlook, fostering innovation, creativity, and excellence across teaching, research, and public engagement. Situated on a beautiful parkland campus at Belfield, UCD offers a dynamic and inclusive environment where ideas flourish and collaboration thrives.
UCD is ranked 47th in the world and 27th in Europe in the 2026 QS World University Rankings for Sustainability — reflecting its deep commitment to environmental and societal impact. UCD is the only Irish member of the prestigious European university network alongside its Triple Crown accreditation from EQUIS, AMBA, and AACSB for its business school.
The university's main Dublin campus offers world-leading facilities, including the UCD O'Brien Centre for Science, UCD Sutherland School of Law, UCD Lochlan Quinn School of Business, UCD Moore Centre for Business, and the UCD Student Centre. The campus offers students access to a thriving, English-speaking European capital city, among the safest in the world.
