Overview
Maynooth University (MU) is a constituent university of the National University of Ireland in Maynooth, County Kildare, Ireland. It was founded by the Universities Act, 1997, from the secular faculties of the now separate St Patrick's College, Maynooth, which was founded in 1795. The university consists of two connected campuses: an older southern campus with 19th-century buildings shared with St Patrick's College, and a modern northern campus occupying approximately 40 hectares. Over 16,000 students are enrolled in the university, employing over 1,000 staff from over 20 different countries.
Maynooth University is internationally recognised for the quality and value of its research and scholarship, and its dedication and commitment to teaching and students. Part of the NUI and formally established as an autonomous university in 1997, Maynooth University traces its origins to the foundation of the Royal College of St. Patrick in 1795, drawing inspiration from a heritage that includes over 200 years of education and scholarship. The university is a modern institution — dynamic, rapidly-growing, research-led and engaged — yet grounded in historic academic strengths and scholarly traditions.
Maynooth University is the nation's fastest growing university. It has won an international reputation for the standing of its research expertise and has the best record for commercialising research of any Irish university. The institution has a number one rank in the country as per the Times Higher Education Best Young University Rankings. Maynooth University counts two Nobel Peace Prize winners among its 100,000 alumni and current academics.
The humanities, social sciences and natural sciences form the academic and intellectual core of the university, complemented by strong departments and programmes in teacher education, computer science and electronic engineering, business and law. Maynooth has an international reputation for research in humanities; social and spatial sciences; mathematics, communication and computation; and human health.
Alumni of Maynooth University include the playwright and author Brian Friel, broadcaster Craig Doyle, Nobel laureate John Hume, former Irish minister Mary Hanafin, and 1996 Eurovision Song Contest winner Eimear Quinn. Former Irish President Éamon de Valera lectured in Mathematics and Mathematical Physics at Maynooth in 1912. The university also has an international reputation as the happiest international student university in Europe, according to the StudyPortals International Student Satisfaction Award — a uniquely powerful endorsement for Indian students considering a community-centred campus experience.
