Overview
Massey University has three campuses in Palmerston North (Manawatū), Albany (Auckland), and Wellington. It is unique in that it delivers research-led teaching and research training across all three campuses. The student body has a high percentage of international students coming from over 100 countries. Formally known as Te Kunenga ki Pūrehuroa in Māori — meaning "the place of all beginnings" — Massey is one of New Zealand's most distinctive and versatile universities, combining a rich agricultural heritage with world-class research, professional programs, and a pioneering legacy in distance education.
The idea of establishing an agricultural college in New Zealand's North Island gained momentum as early as 1879. Data from Universities New Zealand shows that in 2024 the university had approximately 26,505 students enrolled, making it the country's second-largest university. Research is undertaken on all three campuses and people from over 130 countries study at the university.
It is the only university in New Zealand to offer courses on aviation, dispute resolution, veterinary medicine, and nanoscience. Massey University is also the leading university in New Zealand for online and borderless education, offering a range of undergraduate and postgraduate degrees students can complete fully online. Massey has been delivering distance learning for over 60 years — one of the longest-standing distance education traditions of any university in the world.
Massey University has a QS 5-Star Plus rating — awarded for the third consecutive time — receiving 5 stars in each of the 9 assessed categories: employability, environmental impact, facilities, global engagement, inclusiveness, innovation and knowledge transfer, online learning, research and teaching. Massey is ranked 71st in the world for its high ratio of international students and 120th globally for international faculty ratio.
Notable alumni include Academy Award-nominated filmmaker Anthony McCarten (The Theory of Everything, Bohemian Rhapsody, Darkest Hour), All Blacks rugby star Beauden Barrett, New Zealand Governor-General Dame Cindy Kiro, and Kyle Lockwood (designer of New Zealand's silver fern flag). Massey is also home to Whanganui-based academic and artist connections and is strongly linked to Māori research and indigenous leadership programs.
