Overview
The University of Auckland began as a constituent college of the University of New Zealand, founded on 23 May 1883 as Auckland University College. Housed in a disused courthouse and jail, it started out with 95 students and four teaching staff. Today, formally known by its Māori name Waipapa Taumata Rau ("to gather at a place of many peaks"), the University of Auckland stands as New Zealand's largest and highest-ranked university — a comprehensive research institution with an international reputation built across science, engineering, medicine, law, business, and the creative arts.
The University is ranked 65th in the world by the QS World University Rankings 2026, making it New Zealand's highest-ranked university. It is also the largest and most comprehensive, with more than 45,000 students, including international students representing around 100 countries.
The University of Auckland is New Zealand's leading tertiary institution and the only New Zealand university that has both Engineering and Medical and Health Science faculties. This has enabled pioneering collaborations between medical and engineering researchers and resulted in the creation of the flagship Bioengineering Institute, internationally recognised for its sophisticated computer modelling of living organisms. The University is an international university with formal agreements with 155 universities in 34 countries and is the only New Zealand member of Universitas 21, the Association of Pacific Rim Universities, and the Worldwide Universities Network.
As of the mid-2020s, the university is widely reported as the largest in New Zealand by enrolment, with a student population of around 44,000. Teaching and research are centred on three main campuses in central Auckland: City (the historic core), Grafton (home to the Faculty of Medical and Health Sciences), and Newmarket (acquired in 2013).
Notable alumni include former New Zealand Prime Minister Helen Clark (also former UNDP Administrator), film director Niki Caro, and numerous leaders in science, public policy, law, and the arts. The university's research strengths span bioengineering, marine science, seismology, Māori and Pacific studies, cancer biology, and digital innovation.
