Université Grenoble Alpes

Overview

The Université Grenoble Alpes (UGA) is a public research university in Grenoble, France. Founded in 1339, it is the third largest university in France with about 45,000 students and over 3,000 researchers. Established as the University of Grenoble by Humbert II of Viennois, it split in 1971 following the May 1968 events. Three of the University of Grenoble's inheritors — Joseph Fourier University, Pierre Mendès-France University, and Stendhal University — reunited in 2016 to restore the original institution under the name Université Grenoble Alpes.

Université Grenoble Alpes brings together 57,000 students including 10,300 international students, 3,000 PhD students, and 10,800 staff on several campuses. The IdEx project "Université Grenoble Alpes: university of innovation" was awarded the prestigious "Initiative d'excellence" label in 2016 as part of the national investment programme for the future (PIA) — a distinction reserved for only a dozen university sites across all of France.

The university is organised around two closely located urban campuses: the Domaine Universitaire — covering 175 hectares and straddling Saint-Martin-d'Hères and Gières — and the Campus GIANT (Grenoble Innovation for Advanced New Technologies) in Grenoble, covering 250 hectares. UGA also owns facilities in Valence, Chambéry, Les Houches, Villar-d'Arêne, Mirabel, Échirolles, and La Tronche.

The city of Grenoble is one of the largest scientific centres in Europe, hosting facilities of every existing public research institution in France. This enables UGA to maintain hundreds of research and teaching partnerships, including close collaboration with the French National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS) and the French Alternative Energies and Atomic Energy Commission (CEA). After Paris, Grenoble is the largest research centre in France with 22,800 researchers. In April 2019, UGA was selected to host one of the four French Institutes in Artificial Intelligence.

The university works closely with large-scale international research facilities in Grenoble, including the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (ESRF) and the neutron source of the Institut Laue-Langevin (ILL) — two of the most powerful research tools in the world, giving UGA students and researchers unparalleled access to world-class experimental infrastructure.

The Domaine Universitaire campus has the distinctive feature of being an isolated area dedicated solely to academics and student activities — often compared to an "American campus." It boasts 3,000 trees including an Arboretum with over 250 different species, surrounded by the Isère river and three mountain chains — making it one of the most beautiful campuses in France and Europe. Grenoble is traditionally recognised as one of the best student cities in France.
