Overview

PSL University (PSL or in French Université PSL, for Paris Sciences et Lettres) is a Grand établissement based in Paris, France. It was established in 2010 and formally created as a university in 2019. It is a collegiate university with 11 constituent schools, with the oldest founded in 1530. PSL is located in central Paris, with its main sites in the Latin Quarter, at the Montagne Sainte-Geneviève Campus, at the Jourdan Campus, at Dauphine Campus, at Condorcet Campus, and at Carré Richelieu. 

Located in the heart of Paris, PSL inspires dialog among and between all areas of knowledge, innovation, and creativity. With 17,000 students and 2,900 researchers, it is a human-scale university. PSL includes 9 Component Schools and 2 Associate Members and works closely with 3 research entities. With 28 Nobel laureates, 10 Fields Medal winners, 3 Abel laureates, 50 César, and 79 Molière awardees, it represents circa 10% of French research and has received more than 150 ERC grants since its creation.

PSL is made up of 13 prestigious institutions. Its component schools include: Chimie ParisTech-PSL, Conservatoire National Supérieur d'Art Dramatique-PSL, Dauphine-PSL, École nationale des chartes-PSL, École normale supérieure-PSL, École Pratique des Hautes Études-PSL, ESPCI Paris-PSL, MINES Paris-PSL, Observatoire de Paris-PSL, École Nationale Supérieure d'Architecture de Paris Malaquais-PSL, and École des Arts Décoratifs de Paris-PSL. 

PSL includes some of France's most renowned academic institutions: ENS (École Normale Supérieure) — a "genius factory" educating future scientists including Sartre, Bourdieu, and 15 Nobel laureates; Université Paris-Dauphine, a leader in economics, finance, and management; Mines Paris — an elite engineering school founded in 1783; ESPCI Paris, applied physics and chemistry, where the Curies conducted their research; as well as music and drama conservatories, the La Fémis film school, and École des Beaux-Arts. 

By 2025, PSL had secured over 200 European Research Council grants, including Starting, Advanced, Synergy, and Proof-of-Concept awards. In August 2024, PSL climbed to 33rd in the Academic Ranking of World Universities (Shanghai ranking) — its best result since debuting.

Intakes

PSL follows the French academic calendar with one primary intake and limited spring options for select programs.

Fall Semester (September) — Primary intake; open to all Bachelor's, Master's, and PhD programs.

• Most Master's programs taught in English: applications open January–March 13 (for September start)
• PSL PhD Track applications: October 16 – December 11 (for September start of following year)
• ENS International Selection and Grandes Écoles programs: February–April (program-dependent)
• Dauphine-PSL Bachelor's / Master's: November–April (via Parcoursup or EEF platform)

Spring Semester (January/February) — Available for select programs only; most programs start in September.

Important for Indian Students:

• Both the EEF (Études en France) procedure and PSL's own application portals are mandatory for non-European nationals living in a country affected by the EEF procedure. The EEF application does not affect PSL's selection process and admission offer. 
• The Campus France procedure must be completed through the French Embassy's Campus France office in India (New Delhi or Chennai) before applying for a student visa
• CVEC (Student Campus Life Contribution): €103/year — mandatory for all enrolled students
• Tuition fees in public educational institutions in France are very affordable. The annual fees applied to national degrees are: Bachelor's €175, Master's €243, PhD €365. 
• ENS-PSL admitted normaliens (selected students from France) receive civil servant status and a stipend of ~€1,300/month in exchange for a 10-year public service commitment
• Post-study: France offers an 18-month job-seeker visa (APS — Autorisation Provisoire de Séjour) for international graduates

Note: PSL's admission is handled separately by each constituent school. Polygon Campus primarily assists with graduate-level admissions. Students are encouraged to identify their target school within PSL and apply through that school's specific portal on psl.eu.

Cost of Studying at Université PSL

Tuition fees in public educational institutions in France are very affordable for national diplomas: Bachelor's €175 per year, Master's €243 per year, PhD €365 per year. The majority of PSL's member schools managed to waive increased fees for non-European students, maintaining these minimal rates.  Some professional programs at Dauphine-PSL and executive programs have higher market-rate tuition.

While studying at PSL Research University in France, an international student should have a monthly budget of €600–€900.  Paris is one of Europe's more expensive cities but significantly cheaper than London or New York, and the extraordinary low tuition at PSL makes it one of the world's best value elite university experiences.

Whether French or international students, and whatever the study program — master's, PhD track, etc. — financial support is available at PSL.  PSL and its member schools as well as the French government provide several types of financial aid and scholarships including excellence grants, mobility grants, and social criteria grants for both French and international students.

• PSL PhD Track Grants — Fully funded 5-year programs (2 years Master's + 3 years PhD); taught entirely in English; 7 specialized tracks in Astrophysics, Chemistry, Computer Science, Earth Science & Biodiversity, Engineering, Life Sciences, and Physics; applications open October–December annually ; stipend of approximately €2,200/month gross during the PhD phase

Note: The PSL PhD Track is the single most valuable scholarship opportunity at PSL — fully funded, entirely in English, and requiring no prior French language skills. Indian students with strong backgrounds in physics, chemistry, computer science, or biology should prioritise this. For all applications, early preparation starting in October–November of the year preceding intended enrollment is critical.

Admissions

PSL Research University is highly competitive, with an acceptance rate of around 10–15%. Being a research-intensive and elite institution, admission criteria are rigorous.
