Overview
Daegu Gyeongbuk Institute of Science and Technology (DGIST; Korean: 대구경북과학기술원) is a public science and engineering university located on Daegu Technopolis, Daegu, South Korea. DGIST is one of the four public universities in South Korea dedicated to research in science and technology, along with KAIST, GIST, and UNIST. Under the Special Act on Support of Scientists and Engineers for Strengthening National Science and Technology Competitiveness, the Korean government enacted the Daegu Gyeongbuk Institute of Science and Technology Act and founded DGIST in 2004 as a research institute.
DGIST focuses its research and education in six areas, such as Emerging Materials Science, Information & Communication Engineering, Robotics Engineering, Energy Systems Engineering, Brain Science, and New Biology. The six areas are called 'MIREBraiN': M for Materials, I for Information & Communication, R for Robotics, E for Energy, B for Brain, and N for New Biology. The pronunciation of MIRE in Korean is the same as that of 'future.' DGIST's vision, which was declared in May 2012, is to become a world-leading convergence research university by nurturing the global leaders of knowledge creation and creating future convergence technology.
The graduate program was established in 2011, followed by the opening of the School of Undergraduate Studies in 2014 under the College of Transdisciplinary Studies. For the early 2026 undergraduate admissions cycle, DGIST recorded a competition ratio of 27.85 to 1. A total of 6,182 applications were submitted for 222 undergraduate positions, representing a 23.4% increase in applications compared to the previous year.
DGIST's most revolutionary feature — unique among Korean universities — is its single, department-free undergraduate curriculum. All students enter the College of Transdisciplinary Studies without declaring a major, spending the first year mastering foundational science and engineering, before designing individualised learning pathways called "Tracks" that cut across traditional disciplinary boundaries. This is modelled on the educational philosophy of Caltech and MIT, but taken even further — DGIST is the only Korean national science institute where students are not assigned to a department at all.
All lectures for both undergraduate and graduate programs are conducted in English, as approximately 10% of the student body comprises international students from outside Korea. DGIST is one of the four leading Institutes of Science and Technology in Korea, dedicated to fostering future scientific and technological talent. With its unique and innovative curriculum — including a single, department-free undergraduate college and interdisciplinary programs such as AI and semiconductor engineering — DGIST cultivates global leaders in convergence science and technology.
DGIST had 2,895 total members as of March 2024, including 2,091 students enrolled for the 2025 school year — 1,096 undergraduates, 523 Master's program students, 203 PhD program students, 209 integrated MS-PhD program students, and 60 combined undergraduate-graduate program students. They also include 206 faculty, 256 researchers, and 342 administrative staff. Over 20 domestic and international companies and organisations — including Korea Circuit, iM Bank, Dassault Systèmes, LG Chem, Hyosung Heavy Industries, MathWorks, Celltrion, and Siemens — have served as sponsors, supporting the forum's aim to promote collaboration between academia and industry.

Ranking
Daegu Gyeongbuk Institute of Science and Technology (DGIST) is ranked #370 in QS World University Rankings 2026. DGIST has taken various steps such as establishing innovative undergraduate curriculum and six graduate curricula focused on convergence specialised fields, constructing its campus with cutting-edge facilities on the massive secured area of 670,000m² under the Campus Master Plan, and achieving remarkable research results.
The Korean government established DGIST in 2004 as a national science and technology research institute and to help boost the local economy in Daegu. It then developed into a research-oriented university, offering graduate programmes in 2011 and then opening its first undergraduate programme in 2014. Despite being barely 10 years old as a university, DGIST's trajectory into the QS global top 400 from its founding in 2014 is one of the most remarkable institutional ascents in Korean higher education history.

Scholarships
For both Undergraduate and Graduate programs, DGIST provides: full coverage of tuition fees and monthly student living support or stipend to all admitted students. For the Graduate Program specifically, all admitted students receive full tuition and fees waived plus monthly stipend.
Key funding opportunities include:
- DGIST Full Scholarship (UG — Automatic for ALL Admitted Students) — Scholarships: full tuition and fees waived; monthly student living support provided to all admitted undergraduate students; no application required — every UG student admitted to DGIST automatically receives this; DGIST is one of the only universities in the world where 100% of students receive full tuition support
- DGIST Graduate Scholarship (Master's — Automatic for ALL Admitted Students) — Full tuition waiver plus minimum annual stipend of KRW 15,000,000 (approximately ₹9.3L/year) for Master's students, plus additional research performance incentives; automatically awarded to every admitted graduate student — no separate application required
- DGIST Graduate Scholarship (PhD — Automatic for ALL Admitted Students) — Full tuition waiver plus minimum annual stipend of KRW 22,032,000 (approximately ₹13.66L/year) for PhD students, plus additional research performance incentives; automatically awarded to every admitted doctoral student
- Additional Research Incentives — The amount of additional incentives will vary depending on research performance; top-performing researchers in their labs receive additional grants from supervisor research funding — potential for significantly higher monthly income for outstanding PhD students
- Global Korea Scholarship (GKS / KGSP) — University Track at DGIST — DGIST is a listed GKS University Track institution; GKS covers full tuition plus KRW 900,000–1,000,000/month stipend plus settlement allowance plus health insurance plus round-trip airfare; apply through the Korean Embassy in India (Embassy Track) or through DGIST (University Track)

Note: DGIST's scholarship model is the most generous and most accessible of all Korean universities — unlike most institutions where scholarships are competitive awards given to a subset of students, at DGIST every single admitted student receives full tuition waiver plus monthly stipend automatically. There is no scholarship application to submit.
Admissions
DGIST has an acceptance rate of approximately 20–25%, making it highly competitive. The university attracts top-tier students, especially in the fields of science and engineering, with a strong emphasis on research-driven education. For the undergraduate program, competition is far fiercer — for the early 2026 undergraduate admissions cycle, DGIST recorded a competition ratio of 27.85 to 1, with 6,182 applications for 222 undergraduate positions.
