Ulsan National Institute of Science and Technology (UNIST)

Overview

Ulsan National Institute of Science and Technology (UNIST), founded in 2007, is a leading research-driven university in South Korea specialising in science, engineering, and technology. Situated in Ulsan, a major industrial hub, UNIST offers an innovative academic environment with a strong focus on interdisciplinary studies and global collaboration. The university provides world-class research facilities and fosters a dynamic learning culture, attracting talented students from across the globe.

Since its opening in 2009, UNIST has truly become one of the world's leading science and technology universities. UNIST aims to be ranked within the top 10 science and technology universities by 2030. UNIST tries its very best to cultivate future global leaders. All academic courses at UNIST are conducted in English to promote globalisation of its research and education. Every student is required to take two or more areas of concentration to create a learning environment where conducting multidisciplinary research is possible.

This is UNIST's most defining feature for Indian students — all undergraduate and graduate programs are conducted entirely in English, making it one of the only science and technology universities in South Korea where students can complete a full degree without any Korean language proficiency. UNIST was specifically designed as Korea's answer to Caltech — a small, intensely focused, fully funded, English-medium science and engineering powerhouse.

UNIST is a government-funded national research institute focused on science, engineering, technology, data science, and innovation, located in Ulsan, South Korea's major industrial hub. The university accommodates over 4,500 students and 1,000+ international students from diverse countries worldwide. UNIST is globally recognised as a destination for high-impact research, strong industry associations, and an entirely English-based STEM curriculum. UNIST boasts some of the best young labs, small classes of students, and high rates of graduate employment. It has continually been ranked among the world's top young universities.

Ulsan — South Korea's industrial capital — is home to Hyundai Motor Company's global headquarters, Hyundai Heavy Industries (the world's largest shipbuilder), and SK Innovation (batteries and energy). This industrial concentration makes UNIST's graduates uniquely positioned for careers in automotive engineering, energy technology, marine engineering, and advanced manufacturing.

Ranking

Ulsan National Institute of Science and Technology UNIST has a global rank of 372 in 2026. It continues to play a significant role in South Korea's higher education landscape and has quickly risen to prominence in the global academic community. UNIST has continually been ranked among the world's top young universities — it targets entry into the global top 10 science and technology universities by 2030, reflecting the Korean government's extraordinary investment in this institution.

UNIST's QS subject rankings place it among the global elite in key science and engineering fields — particularly Chemistry, Materials Science, and Energy Engineering — far ahead of its overall university ranking would suggest.
