The University of Edinburgh

Overview

Founded by the town council under the authority of a royal charter from King James VI in 1582 and officially opened in 1583, the University of Edinburgh is one of Scotland's four ancient universities and the sixth-oldest university in continuous operation in the English-speaking world. The university played a crucial role in Edinburgh becoming a leading intellectual centre during the Scottish Enlightenment and contributed to the city being nicknamed the "Athens of the North."

The University of Edinburgh has been a hub for research and academic excellence and numbers more than 20 Nobel laureates among its alumni, faculty members, and researchers. Notable achievements include Alexander Fleming's discovery of penicillin in 1928, which revolutionized medicine, and the creation of Dolly the sheep — the first mammal cloned from an adult somatic cell — by the university's Roslin Institute in 1996. Peter Higgs, a former faculty member, was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 2013 for his work on the Higgs boson, whose discovery deepened the understanding of particle physics.

The university is associated with 20 Nobel Prize laureates, three Turing Award winners, an Abel Prize laureate and Fields Medallist, four Pulitzer Prize winners, three Prime Ministers of the United Kingdom, and several Olympic gold medallists. Among Edinburgh's most celebrated alumni are Charles Darwin (evolution by natural selection), David Hume (the father of empiricism), Alexander Graham Bell (inventor of the telephone), Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (creator of Sherlock Holmes), Robert Louis Stevenson (Treasure Island), the economist Adam Smith (who lectured here before moving to Glasgow), philosopher Bertrand Russell, and Geoffrey Hinton — the "Godfather of AI" and 2024 Nobel Prize winner in Physics.

Edinburgh consistently ranks highly on global league tables and is placed within the top 35 in the QS World University Rankings 2026. With a diverse and dynamic student population, the University is home to over 27,500 students, of whom around 6,000 come from outside the UK, reflecting its status as a truly international university. Students are drawn from more than 150 countries, creating a rich and multicultural academic community. The university does not have a single campus — instead, its buildings are woven across five connected areas of Edinburgh's breathtaking Old and New Town, with Old College (designed by Robert Adam) at its historic heart.

Edinburgh receives approximately 60,000 applications each year, making it the second most popular university in the United Kingdom. For Indian students specifically, Edinburgh hosts around 900 Indian students — the 5th-largest international group — and offers a vibrant Indian community, strong cultural ties with India including the Charles Wallace India Trust scholarship, and a city renowned for its festivals, historic architecture, and welcoming character.
