Overview
Osaka University, sometimes called OU, is a Japanese national university that was founded in 1931 as the sixth imperial university of Japan. It is located in Osaka, Japan, and has three main campuses — Suita, Toyonaka, and Minoh. In 2007, the university merged with the Osaka University of Foreign Studies, adding a dedicated faculty in foreign languages and international studies.
Upward of 23,000 students attend the institution, and around two-thirds of them study at the undergraduate level. Roughly 9% of the student body is international. Tuition costs are the same for domestic and international students, and university housing is available for both undergraduate and graduate students. The research-oriented university has 11 undergraduate schools: human sciences, foreign studies, law, letters, economics, science, medicine, dentistry, pharmaceutical sciences, engineering and engineering science.
Popularly known as Handai (阪大) in Japan, Osaka University is Japan's third most prestigious national university — deeply embedded in the Kansai region's extraordinary industrial, biomedical, and cultural fabric. Osaka, Japan's second-largest metropolitan area and the historical commercial capital of the country, provides a uniquely dynamic environment for research and industry collaboration, with deep ties to Panasonic, Daikin, Sharp, Suntory, and Takeda Pharmaceutical — all headquartered in the region.
Osaka University is particularly recognised for its contributions to advanced scientific fields, including laser science, robotics, and immunology. Its research strength is reflected in its association with six Nobel laureates, including Takaaki Kajita, whose work has had a significant impact on particle physics. Osaka University offers a Tuition Waiver System (Tuition Waiver System for Honor International Students) for privately funded international students who are recognised as excellent in the graduate school entrance examinations, in order to further strengthen research capabilities and promote the acceptance of international students.
The Graduate School of Engineering Science, Osaka University offers interdisciplinary courses in which lectures, instruction, seminars and research-related supervision are given entirely in English. Eligible students can sequentially attain both a Master's and Doctoral degree from Osaka University, a leading Japanese University, while having minimal to no experience in the Japanese language. This fully English-medium path to a Japanese national university graduate degree is particularly valuable for Indian students.
Notable alumni include Nobel laureate Ryoji Noyori (Chemistry, 2001), Takaaki Kajita (Physics, 2015), and Masatoshi Koshiba (Physics, 2002). Prominent figures include economist Heizo Takenaka, author Shiba Ryotaro, attorney Masaki Kito, and leading figures in Japan's pharmaceutical and technology industries.
