Overview
Yonsei University, established in 1885 as the first Western institution of learning in Korea, is the leading private university located in the heart of Seoul. The university's mission is to educate leaders who will contribute to humanity in the spirit of "truth and freedom" and to foster education, research, medical care, and social contribution in the global community. Today, Yonsei University houses comprehensive undergraduate and graduate programs along with extensive research and medical facilities, enrolling over 38,000 students across four campuses.
Yonsei University's extensive global network and intensive collaboration with over 660 partners exemplify its global outreach. The university's 153 research centers and institutes conduct interdisciplinary, policy-relevant research and foster globally-minded creative leaders. Yonsei University makes significant contributions in all major academic research areas, including medicine, biochemistry, human health, engineering, materials science, chemistry, neuroscience, and the humanities and social sciences.
Yonsei traces its roots to two historic institutions: Gwangherywon (1885) — a government hospital and medical school founded by American missionary physician Horace N. Allen — and Paichai Hakdang (1885) — a Christian school founded by Methodist missionary Henry G. Appenzeller. These merged over time to form Yonsei University in 1957. Yonsei is thus the oldest educational institution founded in the Western tradition in Korea.
Yonsei is the most English-friendly of the SKY universities, housing the oldest and most respected Graduate School of International Studies (GSIS) in Korea. It is located in Sinchon — the absolute heart of youth culture in Seoul — making it famous for having the best student culture, location, and international network among the SKY universities. Yonsei is widely regarded as Korea's "Yale" — prestigious, internationally oriented, and known for exceptional student life.
Yonsei houses the Underwood International College (UIC) — one of Korea's most prestigious English-medium liberal arts colleges — and the SK Global House, a luxury international student dormitory. Over 4,500 international students from 120+ countries currently study at Yonsei, with comprehensive English-medium programs at both undergraduate and graduate levels.
Notable alumni include former Korean Presidents Kim Young-sam and Kim Dae-jung (Nobel Peace Prize laureate), multiple Korean Prime Ministers, and leading figures in Korean business, culture, and international affairs.
