Overview
The University of Otago is a public research collegiate university based in Dunedin, Otago, New Zealand. It was established by ordinance of the Otago Provincial Council in 1869 and opened for teaching in 1871, making it New Zealand's oldest university. In July 2023 the university adopted the Māori identity Ōtākou Whakaihu Waka as part of a major rebrand, with the changes taking effect from May 2024.
The University of Otago is New Zealand's first university, established in 1869. Over 150 years later, Otago remains a leading institution in New Zealand, with a long-standing and international reputation for academic excellence. Otago is New Zealand's top university for educational performance, with a faculty composed of world-class academics and scholars at the cutting edge of their respective fields. Otago prides itself on being a research-led University and is the top-ranked in the country for international student learning.

Otago University hosts 21,000 students, including 3,000 international students from more than 100 countries. The Otago University Campuses are based in Dunedin, Auckland, Christchurch, Wellington, and Invercargill. The university is divided into 4 academic divisions delivering hundreds of courses in fields like Health Sciences, Humanities, Science, and Commerce.
Otago is the only university in the country that provides dental training. Other professional disciplines and faculties not available at all New Zealand institutions include Pharmacy, Physical Education, Physiotherapy, Medical Laboratory Science, and Surveying. The university's iconic neo-Gothic stone buildings and the Leith Water running through the campus — set against the rolling hills of Dunedin — make it one of the most architecturally stunning university campuses in the Southern Hemisphere.
Two of the university's alumni, Maurice Wilkins and Sir John Eccles, both received a Nobel Prize in Medicine. Other notable alumni include former New Zealand Prime Minister Bill English, Arthur Porritt (former Governor-General of New Zealand and Olympic medallist), Jack Lovelock (Olympic athletics champion), and dozens of leaders in medicine, law, and the sciences.
