Hanyang University

Overview

Hanyang University traces its roots back to 1939 when the DongA Engineering Institute was established, amidst the turbulence of Korea's history. Dr. Lyun-Joon Kim, a patriot and visionary, founded this institute with the aim of advancing his oppressed country through engineering education and technological training. By 1948, Dr. Kim had transformed his modest institute into the nation's first private university, complete with an engineering department. Later, in 1959, the institute evolved into Hanyang University, offering a comprehensive range of academic disciplines.

Hanyang University was the first college in the country to offer engineering and architecture programmes, and it is frequently ranked among the top STEM universities in the country. The university's founding mission — to advance Korea through engineering and technology — is directly embedded in its name: Hanyang (한양) is the Joseon Dynasty's name for Seoul, and the university was built to serve the capital's industrialising nation.

In 2006, Hanyang was chosen as one of twenty-eight project teams for the Brain Korea (BK21) Phase II project, which is the Korean government-sponsored effort to build and promote world-class research universities. Between 2006 and 2009, Hanyang ranked first among Korean institutions in terms of technology transfer income, generating more than 10 billion won. Hanyang runs the Intractable Neurological Disorders Cell Therapy Center.

Hanyang University boasts two campuses: the main campus in Seoul and the ERICA (Education Research Industry Cluster) campus in Ansan, GyeongGi Province, situated within one of Korea's largest industrial complexes. The main Seoul Campus houses various institutions including Hanyang Women's University, Hanyang International Hospital, Hanyang Elementary School, and Hanyang Subway Station. There are 15 colleges and 60 departments on the Seoul campus.

Each year, Hanyang University welcomes over 3,000 international students and sends over 3,300 students on study abroad programmes. Some of the notable names among alumni are Hong Nam-ki (Minister of Economy and Finance and Deputy Prime Minister of South Korea), Choo Mi-ae (Minister of Justice of South Korea), Jang Keun-suk (South Korean Actor), and Im Jong-seok (South Korean Politician).
