Victoria University of Wellington

Overview

Victoria University of Wellington (Māori: Te Herenga Waka; also known by its shorter names "VUW" or "Vic") is a public research university in Wellington, New Zealand. It was established in 1897 by an act of the New Zealand Parliament, and was a constituent college of the University of New Zealand. The university is well known for its programmes in law, the humanities, and some scientific disciplines.

Victoria University of Wellington is New Zealand's capital city university. It is a world-ranked university with a proud tradition of academic excellence. The University is located at the heart of New Zealand in Wellington, across three vibrant city campuses. Like Wellington, the University actively encourages creativity, innovation, and sustainability, as seen in globally-ranked research, the Miramar Creative Centre, the Atom Innovation Lab, and a commitment to being a zero-carbon University by 2030.

Wellington's capital city status gives the University networks and relationships with many national organisations, including with leaders and thinkers in politics, government, culture and heritage, business, and science. The University's Pipitea campus is just a short walk from New Zealand's Parliament buildings, where government officials meet to discuss and pass legislation.

The university is home to three principal campuses: the main Kelburn campus (on a hillside overlooking Wellington with stunning harbour views); the Pipitea campus (adjacent to Parliament and the Wellington CBD, home to law and business); and the Te Aro campus (in Wellington's creative arts district, home to architecture and design). The Miramar Creative Centre near the iconic Wētā Workshop gives creative arts students direct industry access to New Zealand's world-famous film and digital effects community.

Alumni include Prime Ministers Chris Hipkins and Bill English, Oscar winners Taika Waititi (Jojo Rabbit, Thor: Ragnarok), Jane Campion (The Piano, The Power of the Dog), and Fran Walsh, actor Sam Neill, Nobel chemist Alan MacDiarmid, and Flight of the Conchords' Bret McKenzie. Over 140,000 graduates worldwide amplify the university's legacy in politics, arts, science, and business.

Victoria had the highest average research grade in the New Zealand Government's Performance-Based Research Fund exercise in both 2012 and 2018, having been ranked 4th in 2006 and 3rd in 2003.  This consistent research excellence — across law, humanities, science, and policy — makes Victoria the intellectual heartland of New Zealand's capital.
