Overview
The University of Karlsruhe was founded on 7 October 1825 by Grand Duke Ludwig I of Baden under the name Polytechnische Schule. It was modelled on the École polytechnique in Paris. The university is the oldest technical university in Germany and the fourth oldest in Europe and has traditionally focused on engineering, natural sciences, and economics. Karlsruhe Institute of Technology was officially established in 2009, following the merger of the University of Karlsruhe and the Karlsruhe Research Center.
The 2009 merger of University of Karlsruhe (founded 1825) with Karlsruhe Research Centre created an institution unlike any other in Germany. KIT holds Excellence University Status — one of only 11 German universities with this designation — is a TU9 Member (part of Germany's elite alliance of technical universities), and is the only German university integrated with the Helmholtz Association national research center, with a research budget of over €1 billion annually.
With over 22,000 students, 9 faculties, and more than 100 degree programs, KIT combines world-class research with top-tier education. With 5,200 international students from the 25,000 total enrollment, KIT employs about 9,300 staff (6,000 in science/research).
Professors and former students have won six Nobel Prizes and ten Leibniz Prizes, the most prestigious as well as the best-funded prize in Europe. KIT is well known for many inventors and entrepreneurs who studied or taught there, including Heinrich Hertz (discoverer of electromagnetic waves), Karl Friedrich Benz (inventor of the automobile), and the founders of SAP SE.
