Overview

Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München (LMU Munich) is a public research university in Munich, Bavaria, Germany. Originally established as the University of Ingolstadt in 1472 by Duke Ludwig IX of Bavaria-Landshut, it is Germany's sixth-oldest university in continuous operation. In 1826, it was moved to its present-day location in Munich by King Ludwig I of Bavaria.

43 Nobel Laureates are associated with LMU to date. Among these are Wilhelm Röntgen, Max Planck, Werner Heisenberg, Otto Hahn, and Thomas Mann.  LMU has one of the largest medical complexes in Europe, with 46 clinics, institutes, and departments, as well as 46 interdisciplinary centres covering all branches of medicine.

Intakes

LMU Munich offers two intake windows for international students each academic year.

Winter Semester (October) — Primary intake; open to all undergraduate and most graduate programs. Application deadline for most programs: July 15.

Summer Semester (April) — Available for select programs. Application deadline: January 15.

Important for Indian Students:

  • An APS (Academic Evaluation Centre) Certificate is mandatory for Indian students before enrollment at LMU
  • Most undergraduate programs at LMU are taught in German; strong German proficiency is required

Cost of Studying at Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München

LMU does not charge tuition fees for most Bachelor's and consecutive Master's programs, regardless of nationality. Students only need to pay a semester fee of approximately €85–€140, which includes public transport in Munich.

Admissions

LMU is a highly competitive institution. The overall acceptance rate is estimated at approximately 10% for undergraduate programs and ranges between 10% and 15% for international master's programs.  For the most competitive programs such as Medicine and Psychology, only about 5–8% of applicants secure a place. 

For Graduate (Master's) Programs:

  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant field from a recognised university
  • Strong academic record — high GPA recommended; specific requirements vary by program
  • German Proficiency: TestDaF 4×4 or DSH-2 (for German-taught programs)
  • English Proficiency: IELTS 6.5+ / TOEFL iBT 80+ (for English-taught programs)

For Undergraduate Programs:
