Overview

Heidelberg University, officially known as Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg, was founded in 1386 — making it the oldest university in Germany and one of the oldest in the world still in continuous operation. Located in the picturesque university city of Heidelberg in Baden-Württemberg, it was designated a University of Excellence under Germany's prestigious Excellence Initiative.

The university is home to over 31,365 students, out of which 6,191 are newly enrolled and around 6,296 are international students.  Heidelberg University offers a truly global academic environment spread across three major campuses: Old Town, Neuenheimer Feld, and Bergheim. 

Alumni and faculty of the university include many founders and pioneers of academic disciplines, and a large number of internationally acclaimed philosophers, poets, jurisprudents, theologians, and natural and social scientists. 33 Nobel Laureates, at least 18 Leibniz laureates, and two Oscar winners have been associated with Heidelberg University.

Alumni include the "Father of Psychology" Wilhelm Wundt, the "Father of Physical Chemistry" J. Willard Gibbs, the "Father of American Anthropology" Franz Boas, and Dmitri Mendeleev, who created the periodic table of elements. Five chancellors of Germany have attended the university, the latest being Helmut Kohl. The Faculty of Medicine is ranked #1 in Germany and top 25 globally (QS 2025).

In the 2026 edition of the QS World University Rankings, Heidelberg ranked 80th globally and third in Germany. According to the 2025 Times Higher Education World University Rankings, the university was ranked 47th in the world and held the position as the third best university in the country. In the 2025 ARWU World Rankings, Heidelberg secured the 51st position worldwide and was ranked third nationally. 

In Graduate Employability Rankings, Heidelberg University held the 45th rank by Times Higher Education.

Intakes

Heidelberg University offers two intake windows for international students each academic year.

Winter Semester (October) — Primary intake; open to most undergraduate and graduate programs.

  • For undergraduate programs without admission restriction: Applications accepted June 1 – September 30
  • For graduate programs: Deadlines vary by program; typically April 15 – July 15

Summer Semester (April) — Available for select programs.

  • Application deadline for most programs: January 15

Important for Indian Students:

  • An APS (Academic Evaluation Centre) Certificate is mandatory for Indian students before enrollment
  • Most Bachelor's programs are taught in German; a strong German language qualification is essential
  • Many Master's and PhD programs — especially in sciences, medicine, and international studies — are offered in English
  • Applications are submitted through Heidelberg's heiCO online portal

Cost of Studying at Universität Heidelberg

Heidelberg University charges its international students from non-EU/EEA countries a tuition fee of €1,500 per semester for the winter semester 2025/26.  This is relatively low compared to most global universities.

Admissions

Heidelberg University's acceptance rate is approximately 17%, indicating a competitive but more accessible admission process compared to TUM and LMU. However, high-demand programs like Medicine and Psychology are significantly more selective. Heidelberg does not require SAT, ACT, GRE, or GMAT for most programs.

For Graduate (Master's) Programs:
