Princeton University

Overview

Princeton University is a private Ivy League research university located in Princeton, New Jersey, United States. Founded in 1746 in Elizabeth as the College of New Jersey, Princeton is the fourth-oldest institution of higher education in the United States and one of the nine colonial colleges chartered before the American Revolution. It officially became a university in 1896 and was subsequently renamed Princeton University.

Princeton has long been committed to advancing knowledge across the humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, and engineering — and is unique among elite US universities for its profound emphasis on undergraduate education alongside world-class graduate research.

The university provides undergraduate and graduate instruction to approximately 9,000 students on its main campus spanning 600 acres. Princeton houses around 2,100 international students on its campus, accounting for 23% of the total student body and representing 140 countries. The number of Indian students on the Princeton campus as of 2024 is 197.

Princeton offers 55 undergraduate interdisciplinary certificate programs, 18 master's degree programs, 33 interdisciplinary programs, and 42 doctoral programs.  Every undergraduate is required to complete an independent senior thesis — a defining feature that sets Princeton apart from almost every other university in the United States.

As of October 2025, 81 Nobel laureates, 16 Fields Medalists, and 17 Turing Award laureates have been affiliated with Princeton University as alumni, faculty members, or researchers. Princeton has also been associated with 217 Rhodes Scholars and 137 Marshall Scholars. Two US Presidents — James Madison and Woodrow Wilson — along with 12 US Supreme Court Justices are counted among Princeton's alumni. Other distinguished graduates include Michelle Obama, Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, and Apollo astronaut Pete Conrad.

Princeton's endowment stands at $37.7 billion — the largest endowment per student in the United States.

Intakes

Princeton University offers admissions for international students primarily through a single annual intake cycle.

Fall Intake (September) — Primary and only intake; open to all undergraduate and most graduate programs.

Undergraduate Application Deadlines: Princeton offers Single-Choice Early Action (SCEA) — applications typically open in August and the Early Action deadline falls in early November. Regular Decision applications are due in early January.

Graduate Application Deadlines: Graduate program deadlines vary by department. Most engineering and science programs accept applications between September and December for the Fall intake. Applications for the Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering department, for example, open in September and close on December 1.

Note: Polygon Campus primarily assists with graduate-level admissions. Students are encouraged to confirm specific intake availability and deadlines with their chosen Princeton department directly.

Princeton's School of Engineering and Applied Science has 186 full-time faculty, with a PhD student-faculty ratio of 4.4:1.

Cost of Studying at Princeton University

Princeton is a private university and charges the same tuition rate for all students regardless of residency. However, its need-blind admissions policy and no-loan financial aid model mean most admitted students pay far less than the listed price.

The total student budget for the 2025–26 academic year is approximately $90,430, not including travel expenses, which vary depending on a student's country of residence.  The estimated cost of attendance for 2026–27 is $94,624, including direct costs such as tuition, housing, food, and fees, as well as indirect costs such as books, supplies, and personal expenses.

Type of Expense Annual Cost — International Students (INR Approx.)

Scholarships

Princeton's financial aid program for undergraduates is recognised as one of the most generous in the country. Financial aid is provided entirely in the form of grants that do not need to be repaid, meaning undergraduates can graduate from Princeton debt free. Princeton was the first university in the country to eliminate loans from its financial aid package.

Approximately 90% of recent seniors graduated with no debt. For seniors who borrowed, the average total indebtedness at graduation was just $18,100. Admission is need-blind for all applicants, including international students.

Financial aid covers the full cost of attendance — including tuition, housing, food, books, and personal expenses — for most families with incomes up to $150,000 a year. Most families with incomes up to $250,000 will pay no tuition. Princeton is one of only a handful of schools in the country that does not limit financial aid available for international students; the full need of all admitted international students is met the same as for domestic students.

Key funding opportunities include:

  • Princeton Need-Based Grants — Cover full demonstrated financial need; available to all admitted students including international students; no repayment required
  • Graduate School Fellowships — Princeton guarantees full funding to all degree-seeking PhD candidates during their regular enrollment period, covering tuition, the student health plan, and a full living stipend
  • Teaching & Research Assistantships (TAs/RAs) — Available for graduate students; funding sources may include internal fellowships, teaching and research assistantships, and external fellowships
  • External Fellowships — Fulbright-Nehru Scholarship, Inlaks Shivdasani Foundation, Tata Trusts, and other external awards are accepted and coordinated with Princeton's support package
  • Princeton Financial Aid Application (PFAA) — Free and easy to use for both US and international applicants

Note: International graduate students are strongly encouraged to explore external scholarship options well in advance of application deadlines.

Admissions

Princeton has a 4.62% acceptance rate during the 2024–25 admissions cycle , making it one of the most selective universities in the world. The Princeton University acceptance rate for international students was just 2.1% for the Class of 2028 , underscoring the highly competitive nature of admissions for overseas applicants.

Princeton follows a holistic admissions process. Princeton has extended its test-optional policy through at least the 2025–26 academic year, even as several peer institutions have returned to requiring standardised test scores.

For Graduate Programs:

A strong academic record is essential — usually a minimum GPA of 3.8–4.0 on a 4.0 scale is expected for competitive programs. Applicants must hold, or expect to hold, a bachelor's degree prior to the start of classes from a recognised institution.

  • Bachelor's degree from a recognised institution
  • GPA of 3.8–4.0 (strongly recommended for competitive programs)
  • TOEFL iBT: 100+ / IELTS: 7.0+ (for non-English-speaking applicants)
  • GRE scores (required for most graduate engineering and science programs)
  • 3 Letters of Recommendation
  • Statement of Purpose
  • CV / Résumé
  • Official transcripts with certified English translations

For Undergraduate Programs:

  • Certificate of completion of secondary education equivalent to US high school (CBSE/ISC for Indian students)
  • GPA of 3.9–4.0 (top of class strongly recommended)
  • TOEFL: 100+ / IELTS: 7.0+ (if English is not the primary language of instruction)
  • SAT / ACT (optional but recommended — 1510–1580 SAT / 34–36 ACT for competitive applicants)
  • Common Application essay + Princeton-specific supplements
  • 2 teacher recommendations + 1 counsellor letter

Indian students can check Princeton's specific admission requirements for their chosen program directly through Polygon Campus.
